I love being a dad especially around the holidays. The excitement around the house, with two kids who for weeks, anxiously await Santa’s arrival…creates enough energy to power Clark Griswold’s lights. Yes, all that energy is released in a feverish pitch come Christmas morning, as wrapping paper is torn from the gifts the “big guy” left under the tree. Later, we’ll get to see family and friends gather around the table for dinner.
We’ll talk and we’ll laugh as Christmas carols play in the background. We’ll raise a glass of holiday cheer. As the day creeps into evening, the older folks will hit the road. Then others will filter out until the four of us are all who remain. The kids will play with their favorite new toys while my wife and I clean up. We’ll put the kids to bed. And, finally, a calmness will settle over the house.
When the bustle of Christmas Day festivities are over, take time to bask in the glow of the holiday.
As much as I love being a dad, I also love quiet times with my wife. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to the end of the day when it’s just the two of us. I’ll pour us a couple glasses of wine. We’ll shut all the lights, cuddle up on the couch, and bask in the glow of our Christmas tree. Heck, I may even steal a kiss or two under the mistletoe.
Ahh, the quiet hours. The time to soak in all the day had to offer. That’s where I find the peace that the season brings.
Slow down and notice the memories, the love, the heartfelt warmth of the holiday – there’s nothing like it.
Christmas is a wonderful day. I appreciate it more with each that passes. If there were not a present under the tree for me, I wouldn’t care. (Well, I could always use socks.) My gift is the “Christmas Present.” Nothing purchased in a store could ever replace the memories that will be created. No price can be put on the love that glows brighter than the shiniest star on any tree. And, no hearth could generate more warmth than that which emits from the hearts of those held dear.
So, my Christmas present for you is one that cannot be wrapped. I encourage you to return it over and over. My wish is that you take a few moments, throughout your day, (no matter how hectic) and breathe in all that surrounds you. Let the sounds and sights and smells permeate every pore. Enjoy the present.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Luke, Dawn, Kaitlyn, Jake, and our fur baby, Jersey.
P.S. How do you take time to pause and notice it’s the most wonderful time of the year? I’d love to hear your Christmas traditions.
